Peers cave

Cave on the mountainside above Fish hoek

Peers cave is situated above the Fishhoek dunes. There is an overhang of amazing rock faces. The hike up to it is easy and it takes about 20 minutes to get there. The cave was named after Victor Peers. He and his son excavated the cave in 1927. A human skull that dated back about 13 000 years and other human remains from the Paleolithic period have been found in the area. Shells that are usually found 5 kilometres out to sea were also found deep in the cave.

The cave is regarded as an ancient sacred site and it aligns with the sun at the summer solstice. It is associated with birth and fertility.

To access the cave park at the retirement village. It is recommended that you walk in a group and avoid carrying valuables with you.
