Robinson Dry Dock
In the Alfred basin at the Cape Town Dockyard at the Victoria and Alfred waterfront, is the Robinson dry dock. Still in operation today, it is the oldest dry dock of its kind anywhere in the world. The harbour was designed in the 1860s The Royal Navy had requested that a dry dock be included in the plans to serve their interests in the southern hemisphere The dock is 161.2m long, 20.7m wide with a depth of 7.9m,
The dry dock was named after Governor Sir Hercules Robinson who opened it in 1882, it was used to repair over 300 ships during WWII. The foundation stone was laid in— by Prince Alfred 2nd son of Queen Victoria
The old pumphouse is currently home to the Cape Town Comedy Club. It is also the building where the first dynamo was installed to help illuminate Table Bay Harbour, 10 years before the rest of Cape Town had power. The building dates back to 1892.
