Salmonsdam Nature Reserve was established in 1962. has an abundance of birdlife, stunning waterfalls, and plenty of mountain fynbos. It is at the foot of the Perdeberg range, the Reserve is named after.  Robert Salmon  Captain of the Birkenhead. Salmonsdam Reserve is 834 hectares and is in the catchment area for the Paardenberg River, which joins the Uilenkraals River south of the reserve. The reserve was established in 1962.

There are three fairly easy hikes in the reserve, The Mountain Trail is the longest one and is a circular 4-kilometre hike that incorporates incredible views over Walker Bay, Caledon, and Bredasdorp. For the waterfall hike that passes many waterfalls along the way you need to buy a permit obtainable at the gate
