Schapenberg Conservancy

Walks for wine and conservation, somerset West

The Schapenberg-Sir Lowry’s Conservancy was initiated in 2000 by the Helderberg Conservation Forum (HCF) along with some private landowners. The area is home to 650 – 750 fynbos species and the goal of the HCF is to preserve the natural environment on the Schapenberg hills and lower slopes of the Hottentot’s Holland Mountains up to Sir Lowry’s Pass which comprises over 1600ha. The Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve lies within the conservancy. The granite foothills below the mountains which support the endangered  Boland Granite Fynbos and the critically endangered Granite Renosterveld are over 600 million years old. Intensive agriculture and forestry over the last 300 years have led to the invasion of the area by alien vegetation and the consequent loss of natural vegetation. This has impacted the flow of water in the Sir Lowry’s River. The survival of the Indigenous fynbos also impacts the survival of birds animals reptiles and insects.

Take the N2 towards Sir Lowry’s Pass. Turn left to Sir Lowry’s Pass village.
Go through the village. Over the rail tracks turn right or left; onto the Schapenberg wine route.

Guided walks and wine tastings on the Schapenberg Hills are conducted to raise funds for conservation efforts.   info@walksforwine.co.za           website
