Sea Point Pavillion Swimming Pool

Public swimming pool

At Sea Point Pavillion Swimming Pool the pools mainly use filtered seawater. There is a 50m main pool and a children’s pool. There is also a diving pool. Lifeguards are on duty.

This huge outdoor pool complex, with its lovely art deco touches, is a Sea Point institution. It gets very busy on hot summer days – not surprisingly since the four pools are always at least 10°C warmer than the very cold ocean.

In 1895 swimming baths were opened in the area, these had separate bathing hours for women and men. and were for white people only.   The baths were located at the bottom of Church Road. The baths were destroyed by a storm in 1911. The baths were operated by a centrifugal gas-powered pump to fill the pools with water during low tide. Season tickets could be purchased or an entrance fee of sixpence was charged.

These baths were destroyed by a storm in 1911 and were never rebuilt, but construction began on the Sea Point Pavilion in 1913 they are located at the end of Clarens Road.
