Seaforth Beach

Beach in Simon's Town

In the Simons Town suburb of Seaforth is a narrow beach. It is only 600 metres wide. The beach backed by grassy slopes is largely protected from the wind.  It is close to Boulders beach and some penguins can be seen here. The best times are in the early morning just after sunrise and in the early evening at sunset. The penguins waddle happily along the sands. Seaforth. is a good and safe beach where children can swim. There is also a safe tidal pool to swim in.

THE QUARRY ON SEAFORTH BEACH

There is a very old quarry that was worked on Seaforth beach. Granite was shaped from the surrounding rocks to reinforce the Roman rock lighthouse which was becoming a bit shaky. built on a solid rock just off the coast. This construction to stabilise the lighthouse took place in 1865. A reinforcing sheath of rocks twelve and a half feet high was built around the base of the lighthouse. Stonemasons carefully chiselled out 4-ton rounded-off sections of rock. The pieces were assembled first on land to ensure they fitted correctly before towing them out to the lighthouse on a specially built barge. The operation was complicated and involved an aerial railway to pull the boulders into place.

You can still find evidence of chiselling on the rocks if you visit Seaforth Beach today.
