Shipwreck museum
Museum in Bredasdorp
Our Coastline is known as the “Graveyard of Ships” Over 250 vessels and 2,500 people lost their lives in its treacherous waters. The ships have met their sad end on the southern shores of South Africa since Europeans first sailed past and experienced the Cape of Storms. The museum is housed in a historical building in the centre of town. Scale models show a ship breaking up and disintegrating and being buried by sand. The majority of the exhibits are artefacts and remains from four of the area’s most significant wrecks, the Arniston, the Birkenhead, the Queen of the Thames and the Oriental Pioneer.
