Simon’s Town Dockyard

A small dockyard was established by the Dutch East India Company in 1743. The British took it over in the 1790s. Simon’s Town got its name after the second British occupation in 1806.

Construction of a new harbour began in 1900. It encompassed 11 hectares. The breakwater was 914 metres long . The drydock is 240metres by 29 metres. Work was completed in 1910.

 A combined Mast house, boathouse, and sail loft, dating to 1815 now serve as the SA Naval Museum.

. The dockyard and was handed over to the South African Navy in 1957 under the Simonstown Agreement. Work was done to expand the dock in 1975 to form a new tidal basin.
