Simonsberg conservancy
Under the stewardship of Cape Nature, 5 wine farms formed this conservancy. There are now over 30 members. Altogether 32% of the farmland is set aside for conservation. This area is within the very biodiverse, Cape Floral Kingdom which is home to 10 000 different plant species, 70 percent of which are found only in this part of the country. The Greater Simonsberg Conservancy (GSC) protects fragments of critically endangered Swartland shale renosterspruit and mountain fynbos. The Cape leopard is also occasionally seen in the area. There is also a forest of 300-year-old indigenous yellowwood trees on Klapmutskop.
This forest is only 150 hectares yet is filled with wildlife. Nobody even knew it existed until a massive fire in 2000, when the slopes were cleared of alien vegetation.
The trails are well maintained, they vary between 10 km and 25 km. You can pick up a map at Delheim restaurant.
