Tartarus cave
Tartarus Cave is on the mountainside above Muizenberg. Tartarus was the name of an abyss in the underworld. It was named by Johan Myers, who on retiring moved to Kalk Bay in 1924. He spent his retirement years exploring the coast discovering caves and naming them. There are ver 80 caves on the side of this mountain. Park your car at the Baileys Kloof sign. There is a footpath. You access the cave via milkwood and yellowwood forests on the mountainside. The walk to the cave is easy but steep. It is best done from September to December when the walk is shady and you can watch whales in the bay below. Follow the track past the Amphitheatre stone beacon for about 30 minutes when you will see a hole in the ground about 1.5 metres which leads to about 50 metres of chambers. It is advised to walk to the cave in a group for your safety. It is also advisable to go with someone who knows the cave, preferably a member of the speleological association.
