The Beaufort West Museum
For many years Beaufort West Museum was an informal museum that consisted of two rooms. It was established in 1939. The museum was open on Friday and Saturday nights for visitors. On 1 April 1977, it became a provincial government-aided museum. Within a few years, it was extended to include the old Dutch Reformed parsonage and The old town hall that was built in 1865 and housed the municipal offices. During the Anglo-Boer War 1899 – 1902, this building was used as a hospital. Today it houses a magnificent display of awards presented to surgeon Professor Chris Barnard who performed the world’s first heart transplant in 1967. Chris Barnard is probably Beaufort West’s most famous person.
