An exceptional Edwardian building, its copper-coated dome is topped by a cupola in teak. The Centre for the Book has had a gloomy life, one that began in 1906. It was officially opened by Sir Walter Hely-Hutchinson as the senate-house for the University of the Cape of Good Hope. (the forerunner of the University of South Africa) It is associated with the nearby South African National Library and aims at promoting literacy in South Africa through general-purpose exhibitions. The central hall has a selection of locally published books and is occasionally used for seminars, corporate events, and intimate concerts. it is also occasionally hired out for weddings.
