The Goukamma Reserve
The Goukamma Nature Reserve lies between Knysna and Sedgefield on the Garden Route. It is a small reserve. Goukamma is a word of Khoisan origin that refers to a dune succulent creeper called Hottentots fig. There are 2,500 hectares of dense coastal forest rich with milkwood, yellowwood, and candlewood trees. The Goukamma River and estuary plus, access to Groenvlei Lake are within the reserve. There is an 18 km stretch of deserted coastline, so the area is also a marine reserve. The coastline extends from Buffalo Bay to just outside Sedgefield and 1 nautical mile out to sea. For bird enthusiasts, there is  a range of birds to see including the rare African black oystercatcher and over 220 other species of birds
Within the reserve are some of the highest vegetated dunes in the country. This is home to Vervet Monkeys, Bushbuck, Grysbok, Bushpig, Porcupine, Mongoose, and Honey Badgers.
There are about 35 kilometres of trails. Picnic sites are equioped with fireplaces. Fishing is allowed with a permit. Swimming in the sea here is dangerous, also look out for snakes, particularly puff adders.
The best time to visit is in September/October when the spring flowers add colour to the fynbos.
Roughly 40km past George and between the towns of Sedgefield and Knysna, you will find the turn-off to Buffalo Bay. Follow this road for 8km and then turn right (towards the river) and into the reserve.
