The Kaaimans River

The Kaaimans River is also sometimes known as the Keerom River. The mouth of the river lies near Wilderness The nearest large towns along the course are Mossel Bay and George.

In years gone by The Kaaimans River was an obstacle for travellers. Ox wagons had to wait sometimes for weeks for waters to subside before being able to cross safely.

During times when it was full, the river was called “Keeromrivier” (Turnabout River) because of the raging waters, travelers often chose to turn around and attempt to find another route. This problem was eventually solved with the construction of the Seven Passes Road

The tidal estuary at the river mouth is crossed by a rail bridge.

Whitewater kayaking is one of the popular activities on this river.
