The old Kaaimans River Bridge

The Kaaimans River Bridge is on the Kaaimansgat Pass. This Pass is one of the historic “Seven Passes” en route between George and Knysna. It is an old and narrow road within a beautiful indigenous forest. The old bridge over the river was originally built in the 1800s by Thomas Bain’s brother-in-law – Adam De Smidt. The bridge was built from imported pine. It was later replaced with concrete. Kaaimans River Bridge has the date 1904 inscribed on it along with the coat of arms of King Edward. The bridge was declared a national monument in the 1970s.
