The Klein River

River flowing through the Overberg

The source of the  Klein River is in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. It flows behind the Klein River Mountains towards Caledon then through the rich Akkedisberg Pass, into Stanford. The river is about 80 km long.  15 km past Stanford it joins Hermanus Lagoon then on to the sea.

The river is important for irrigation for farming along the banks. The water from the Klein River is crucial for the ecological functioning of the estuary ecosystem which includes many species of fish.

Klein River can be accessed at the bottom of King Street, Stanford where you will find the estuary of the river leading to the Hermanus Lagoon. Swimming is allowed and is safe. The Stanford Wandelpad is a gentle walking trail that meanders along the river. Dogs are welcome
