The Koue Bokkeveld

The Bokkeveld, is also often referred to as known as Koue Bokkeveld  This is a range of Mountains The name m  means Cold Buck Shrubland. The range is composed of Cedarberg Sandstone of the Cape System. It is known to be one of the coldest places in the Western Cape in Winter. Elevations of the range are an average of 1,600 m and there is often snow in the winter months.

The Koue Bokkeveld falls within the Olifants/Doring system and the Doring River has its sources in this range, contributing substantially to the flow of the Olifants River catchment area. There is mountain fynbos at higher altitudes.

In 1838 a meteorite crashed on the Koue Bokkeveld. It is known as the Koue Bokkeveld or CM2 meteorite. Fragments were dispersed over a wide area but most of them have now been lost. There are also some ancient San rock paintings at Katbakkies.

The Piet Esterhuysen Pass passes through the Bokkeveld.
