The Old Iron Bridge was the first iron bridge in the Cape colony. It was on a ship bound for Australia in 1850. The ship docked in Table Bay in need of repairs. It was not possible to reload the bridge onto the ship so it was left behind. It was taken to the site on the Berg River where it fitted perfectly and was opened in 1863. The 110-metre single girder bridge can still be seen over the Berg River near Picketberg today.
