The Olifants River Bridge

Bridge near Klawer

The arch bridge over the Olifants River was constructed in the early 1950s. This bridge had steadily deteriorated over time. The original bridge is narrow and due to the widening of the road, it caused a bottleneck. A design was approved for a new bridge alongside the old one to increase traffic capacity. Challenges associated with the design included plans to ensure minimal maintenance, aesthetics, and span. Eventually, the design included an arch with a  continuous deck of 165 metres. The bridge was completed in 1983
