The Oude Werf hotel

heritage hotel in Stellenbosch

The Werf is the Oldest Hotel in Stellenbosch, established in 1686. It was originally a modest thatch-roofed church built at the request of Dutch governor Simon van der Stel. The church was deconsecrated after being destroyed by a fire in 1710. In 1802 an inn was built on the site by the Wium family but sadly this was also destroyed by fire.

The hotel was rebuilt and 80 years later another fire destroyed the inn. In 1973 owner, Gerhard Lubbe eventually restored the property. He incorporated its history into the hotel. A historical church graveyard can still be seen under the hotel’s kitchen today!

The hotel changed hands again in 2007 by the Petousis family who developed it into what it is today,  The hotel staff is dedicated to ensuring that your stay is nothing short of perfect. From arranging tours to making restaurant reservations, we are here to provide you with an exceptional experience.
