The Oudtshoorn Suspension Bridge

Bridge over the Grobelaars River

The Oudtshoorn Suspension Bridge was built over the Grobbelaars River in 1913. The bridge was constructed to link the fashionable residential area of Westbank with the centre of town. The town of Oudtshoorn had developed on both sides of the river. Often during the rainy season, the river became impassable. This was very inconvenient until 1913 when the construction of the bridge was approved by the town council.

It was constructed by the London-based, Scottish firm of Rowley & Sons. Hitchers & Booth were the consulting engineers. The single-span 91-metre bridge was completed in 1914. It was declared a National Monument in 1964
