The Wreck of The BOS 400

Shipwreck off Llandudno

In 1994 the BOS 400, a French Lay Barge was wrecked in 1994 at Duiker Point, near Sandy Bay. It was the biggest floating crane in South Africa. As it had no engines of its own it had to be towed by tug boats. At the time of the accident it was being towed from The Congo to cape town by a Russian tug called the Tigr. Unfortunately, the tug was not up to the job and a tow rope snapped during a wild storm off the coast of Sandy Bay. Salvage efforts were attempted but there had been too much damage and the effort had to be abandoned.

The remains of the crane can still be seen above the surface of the water at Duiker Point. It is a two-kilometre hike from Sandy Bay
