The Wreck of the Childe Herold

The Childe Herold was built in 1825 by Thompson George and Co. It was carrying more than 1300 pieces of ivory, coffee pearl shells, and shawls en route from Bombay to London. This British 463-ton wooden ship was wrecked off Dassen Island. On the13 February 1850, Captain Byres tried to make it to shore but sadly he drowned.
