The Wreck of The Commadore

Shipwreck off Milnerton

The Commadore was a four-masted schooner that was built in the early 20th century in America. During the Second world war, it was converted into a floating coal hulk and later a coal transporter.

Until The Commadore was intentionally scuttled, it had been through quite an eventful time.

During a return trip to South America, the ship was almost destroyed several times, At one point it even caught fire. One crew member also almost got washed overboard and was rescued by two of his shipmates. The ship managed to make it home but was no longer considered seaworthy. It was decided to scuttle the ship. In 1946 the ship was stripped, set on fire, and allowed to run aground near Milnerton Lagoon

A storm uncovered the remains of the ship in 2008. Some of the original crew who were still alive came forward with stories of the adventures of the Commadore.

An interesting fact is that the film “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935) used the ship as a set.
