The wreck of the MV Rockeater

Wreck at smitswinkel Bay near Cape Point

The MV Rockeater was built in 1945 in New Orleans and it served as a United States Navy coastal freighter for several years until she was purchased by South Africa’s Scean Science and Engineering Company in 1964. She was used for diamond prospecting and offshore drilling in Namibia This 65-metre ship was essentially a massive precision instrument, The Rockeater was scuttled in 1972s to form an artificial reef. Today, you’ll find the vessel at Smitswinkel Bay about 34 meters down. The wreck is deteriorating rapidly and it is dangerous to penetrate the body of the wreck. There is however a lot for divers to see at the site.
