The wreck of the Nolloth
The 347-ton Dutch coaster, Nolloth, was approaching Oliphantsbos Point on April 30, 1965. She struck an unidentified object under the water at ten o’ clock at night. The object turned out to have been the Albatross Rock. The crew was airlifted to safety in a naval helicopter. The story got out that The nolloth was carrying 900 bottles of liquor and that barrels of wine littered the beach. But when people arrived to”salvage’ they found the customs department had got there first. Much of the cargo was rescued and trucked to Cape Town, but the cost of removing the wrecked ship was prohibitive. All the salvage had to happen on-site. What could not be removed was left to rust and decay on the beach. These remains lie about 1 km from the wreck of the Thomas T Tucker
