Wemmershoek Dam

Wemmershoek Dam is on the Wemmershoek River and was constructed between 1953 and 1957.  The dam has a capacity of 58 644 000 m3. The wall is 518 metres wide and 55 m at a maximum height above the foundation level.  It is an earth-fill type dam with pitched rock (rip-rap) protection to both the upstream and downstream slopes. Lateral spillways are controlled by three radial gates and chutes which discharge to the river below at  a maximum flow of 1,065 cubic metres per second.

When it is full, the water covers an area of 296 hectares. The catchment area is in the Wemmershoek Mountains, which covers an area of 86 square kilometres

The dam serves mainly for municipal and industrial use and stores approximately 6.5% of the Western Cape Water Supply System capacity. It supplies the city of Cape Town and the surrounding areas.
