Masiphumelele, close to Kommetjie is the name given to this township by its residents, it means “let us succeed” in Xhosa. It was originally called site 5. In the 80s about 500 people who were moved to Khayelitsha, which is about 30 kilometres away, settled there. When apartheid fell, the area grew to have thousands of residents living mostly in shacks. By 2010 there were approximately 38000 people living in Masipumelele, some had built brick homes. Many of the residents are from the Eastern Cape. The infrastructure has been slow to follow the growth, with an overcrowded school and understaffed clinic, life is hard in Masiphumelele.
