History of Strandfontein

Freshwater spring

Strandfontein gets its name from the freshwater spring on the beach which indigenous people have used for drinking water for centuries.

Beach holidays

The first brick house in the area was built in the early 1900s and was owned by Sir Richard Fryer. this was later used as a hotel but sadly was demolished. The area was a popular place for Namaqualand farmers to take beach holidays.
Richard Fryer’s wife’s grave just outside town has been declared a national monument.
Standfontein is a popular venue for whale watching from late July to September and the cliffs provide a great viewing area. The Southern Right whales come close to the shore during calving season.

The postal code for Strandfontein is 7788
