Thrift shopping 101 (Western Cape Thrift stores to explore)

Best 100 thrift shops in the Western Cape

From Pre-Loved to Re-Loved

Donating your unused items or shopping at charity shops offers many benefits. When you donate, your preloved items get a second life, repurposed and re-loved by others. For shoppers, charity shops are a treasure trove of affordable and unique finds.

Why Thrift?

Thrifting has evolved from being something just poor people do, into to a popular hobby, where bargain hunters score interesting and valuable pieces. Successful thrift shopping is an art. Savvy shoppers can find designer items at a fraction of the price. However, it takes practice to sift through racks, so take your time to inspect garments for small flaws. Look closely at labels, as you may uncover hidden gems among the rails such as designer pieces or high-end quality items.

A Sustainable, Stylish Choice

Thrifting isn’t just budget-friendly; it’s also great for the environment. By buying second-hand, you’re reducing waste and promoting sustainable fashion. Plus, you’ll wear unique pieces and you are unlikely to bump into someone else wearing the same outfit as you are. Vintage styles often make a comeback. While there are some styles you hope never to see again, you are bound to find timeless outfits that suit your style.

Flipping for Profit

Another trend in thrifting is called flipping, which is buying second-hand items, upcycling, or reselling them for profit. It’s a great side hustle for those with an eye for quality and creativity.

Ways to help

Most thrift shops particularly those whose business is fundraising will happily accept donations of good used clothing Here are some specific examples:

The Matric Thrift Shop,

This is an initiative that was started in Kuils River. It aims to make matric balls affordable for learners in Mitchells Plain and Athlone by offering formal outfits for only R10. To donate garments, contact Kelly van Wyk in Mitchell’s Plain on 061 461 3233, Kelly Morkel in the Northern Suburbs on 066 219 6763 or Bianca in Athlone on 073 526 3340.

It’s Your Turn

Give those ‘princess gowns’ still taking up space in your closet a second storybook chance. It’s Your Turn focuses on collecting and redistributing old ball gowns/matric dance dresses to girls who could otherwise not afford the frocks for their matric dances. Make a forgotten, momentous, once-off occasion of the past, memorable once again for someone else. Collections can be organised /  083 577 1123 – Ryan
