Meaning of the name

This small town is on the bank of the Duiwenhoks River just South of Heidelberg. The name means amusement or entertainment in Afrikaans. The name may refer to The town’s small industry involving sweet potatoes and witblits.

Economy of the area

There are a few “Capestyle” cottages along a gravel road with some fruit and olive plantations.
The lime-rich soil in the area, in the past sustained hannepoort vineyards. A large farm of 15000 hectares was subdivided and now there are small farms. This little community was once the perfect halfway station between Stilbaai and Riversdale. A toll house was built here for the collection of road taxes:
