Beaches and pools where you can cool off in the Western Cape
At this time of year, the Western Cape experiences very warm weather. Swimming is an ideal way to cool off. Fortunately, there is a wide variety of places to choose from.
A good dose of vitamin sea.
In the western Cape, we have world-class beaches with pristine waters and stunning views. However, always check for lifeguard presence and swim in designated safe zones. Many of these beaches have tidal pools where you can enjoy seawater without wild waves and rip currents. Find a full list of details about beaches here and a list of tidal pools here.
Gansbaai
For those who prefer freshwater, there are rivers and dams where swimming is allowed. Most dams in the Western Cape are safe to swim in. Keen swimmers can join the York Dam swim in Stellenbosch on Friday evenings during summer. Then there is the adventure of places like Suicide Gorge or the pools and waterfalls along the Olifants River. However, these beautiful spots are usually accessed only on foot.
Poolside is my best side.
Most towns have a public swimming pool that is affordable and safe. These facilities typically include shallow pools for small children, lifeguards on duty, and very affordable entrance fees. Swimming is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Beginners and those who prefer a slower pace can enjoy designated areas in most pools.
Slip ‘n slide
Waterparks such as Wild Waters in Plettenberg Bay, Graceland in Paarl, and Milnerton Waterpark are just a few of the facilities with sides and fountains. These are exciting options for children and a great family day out.
Swimming is not only a refreshing activity but also an excellent form of exercise. It engages almost every major muscle group, including arms, legs, torso, and stomach. Water supports up to 90% of the body’s weight, making swimming ideal for people with injuries, arthritis, or joint pain.
