When Simon Van der Stel granted land to Herman Weekens in 1683 he called it De Oude Wijnbergh (Old Wine Mountain) During the winter months ships would dock in Simon’s Baai now “Simon’s Town” The farm was roughly halfway between Cape Town and Simons Baai.
After the British took over the Cape in 1795, the area developed into a garrison town. many troops settled in the area. At first, the Dutch tried to resist the British but were soon driven away. Being a convenient halfway point between Table Bay and False Bay, the area grew rapidly. By the mid 19th century it was a popular place where British civil servants came to retire.
One of the first electric power plants was built here in 1893. It powered the local trams and street lights.
